Evidence-Based

Music Education by the Numbers

Band is much more than an elective. It is a demanding academic and performance-based program that asks students to listen critically, manage their time, work toward long-term goals, and contribute to something larger than themselves. Research consistently shows that music participation is linked to stronger academic outcomes and school engagement.

Skills That Travel Beyond the Band Room

In band, every student matters. Each individual part contributes to the success of the entire ensemble. Students do not simply learn how to perform music — they learn how preparation, persistence, and teamwork turn many different voices into one powerful result.

More Than Music

The numbers tell part of the story. These are the voices of the students who live it.

From a young age, I always dreamed of being in band. When I moved, Mr. Wentzek welcomed me with open arms and gave me the opportunity to become a part of something truly special. Since then, band has given me lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and experiences that have shaped who I am. Through band, I have learned countless life skills that I will carry with me forever, including teamwork, discipline, leadership, and perseverance. It has been there for me during some of my hardest times, giving me a place where I felt supported and encouraged. Music has had an incredible impact on my life, inspiring me to grow as a person and opening doors to opportunities I never imagined. I will always be grateful for everything band has given me and the person it has helped me become.

I am in band because it’s my family and happy place. Ever since I joined band I have been welcomed into a warming family and community that teaches you respect, leadership, and responsibility! I joined band as a color guard member because I wanted to be part of a team and challenge myself. I loved that color guard combines dance, performance, and teamwork. What started as trying something new quickly became something I genuinely enjoyed because of the friendships, the memories, and the confidence I have gained along the way.

I originally joined band because one of my friends wanted me to, but I’ve stayed in band because of the community and family it has given me. Throughout my years in band I have gotten to be involved in a community of people with shared interests and grown alongside them throughout my high school years. The memories I have made throughout high school band are memories I will cherish forever.

I love being in band because it gives me a place to learn new skills, and meet new people that I already have something in common with.

Band is so much more than just playing an instrument to me. It’s a place where I’ve found some of my closest friends, made memories that I’ll carry with me forever, and found a second family. There’s something really special about being surrounded by people who are all working toward the same goal and knowing that every single person matters.

Band has helped me grow in ways I never expected. It’s pushed me out of my comfort zone, helped me become more confident, and taught me the importance of showing up for the people around me. Some of my happiest moments have happened through band, whether it’s on the field, in rehearsal, or just laughing with my friends.

To me, band isn’t just about the music—it’s about the people, the memories, and the feeling of being part of something bigger than myself. It’s become such an important part of who I am, and I’m really grateful for everything it has given me.
